Great Compromise Plan for a bicameral legislature with one equal-representation chamber and one population-based representation chamber
Virginia Plan Called for a) A bicameral legislature, with a lower house elected by the people and an upper house chosen by the lower house. Representation would be based on population. The legislature would create/elect the other two branches of govt.
New Jersey Plan Each state would have only one vote. Congress would have authority to tax and control resources and to elect executive officers.
three-fifths compromise Three-fifths of all slaves would be counted for representation in the House
interstate commerce trade between states
Federalists Supported the adoption of federal framework for government
Anti-Federalists Opposed the Constitution as centralist; opposed it also on the grounds that it did not contain a Bill of Rights
faction A group of persons forming a cohesive minority
tyranny Arbitrary use of power by an oppressive person/organization
rule of law Those who rule must act in accordance with the law
federal system Provides for a division between powers of regional/state and national governments
commerce clause Article 1, Section 8. Congress has the power to regulate interstate commerce
Madisonian Model Madison's model of government: powers divided into three branches
separation of powers The principle of assigning different powers to each branch
checks and balances Each of the three branches can check the actions of the others
veto power The chief executive has the constitutional power to prevent or delay a bill from becoming law
