| Institution | an established official organization having an important role in the life of a country, such as a bank, church, or legislature |
| Social Conflict | he struggle for agency or power in society (societies priorities). |
| Politics | the activities associated with the governance of a country or other area, esp. the debate or conflict among individuals or parties .having or hoping to achieve power |
| Government | the action or manner of controlling or regulating a nation, organization, or people. |
| Power | The ability to influence the behavior of others. |
| Authority | Power that is collectively recognized and accepted by society as legally and morally correct. |
| Public Services | Essential services that many individuals cannot provide for themselves. Ex: Public school, law enforcement, welfare programs, park preservation, build/ maintain roads |
| Autocracy | a system of government by one person with absolute power |
| Monarchy | a form of government with a monarch at the head. (King, queen, emperor, etc) |
| Divine Right Theory | God gave those of royal birth the unlimited right to govern. |
| Dictatorship | a ruler with total power over a country, typically one who has obtained power by force |
| Democracy | a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives |
| Direct Democracy | People participate directly in government decision making |
| Representative Democracy | Will of majority, elected individuals that represent the people. |
| Republic | a state in which supreme power is held by the people and their elected representatives, and which has an elected or nominated president rather than a monarch |
| Limited Government | Government in which strict limitations are placed, usually by a constitution. |
| Parliament/ Bicameral Legislature | The highest legislature, consisting of the sovereign, the House of Lords, and the House of Commons |
| Social contract | An implicit agreement among the members of a society to cooperate for social benefits. |

| Political culture | A patterned set of ideas, values, and ways of thinking about govt. politics. |
| Liberty | he state of being free within society from oppressive restrictions imposed by authority on one's way of life, behavior, or political views |
| Equality | The state of being equal, esp. in status, rights, and opportunities |
| Capitalism | an economic and political system in which a country's trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state. |
| Ideology | System of political ideas. |
| Liberalism | open to new behavior or opinions and willing to discard traditional values |
| Conservatism | holding to traditional attitudes and values and cautious about change or innovation. |
| Progressivism | happening or developing gradually or in stages |
| Moderates | Usually don' classify as Cons. or Lib, can vote for rep. or dem.; Describes themselves as Independent. |
| Radical Left | Major changes in political order, usually to promote human equality. |
| Radical Right | Those who wish to turn the clock back to some previous era |
| Ideologues | an adherent of an ideology, esp. one who is uncompromising and dogmatic. |
