trait a characteristic that an organism can pass on to its offspring through its genes
heredity The passing of traits from parents to offspring
purebred an organism that always produces offspring with the same form of a trait as the parent.
gene segment of DNA that codes for a specific trait
alleles different forms of a gene
recessive alleles an allele that is masked when a dominant allele is present
hybrid an organism that has two different alleles for a trait; it is heterozygous

dominant allele whose trait always shows up in the organism
probability the likelihood that a particular event will occur
punnett square a chart that shows all the possible combinations of alleles that can result from a genetic cross

phenotype an organism's physical appearance
codominance condition in which neither two alleles is dominant or recessive
homozygous having two identical alleles for a trait

pedigree a diagram that shows the occurrence of a genetic trait in several generations of a family

self-pollination the transfer of pollen from the anther to the stigma of the same flower
cross pollination The transfer of pollen from an anther of the flower of one plant to a stigma of the flower of another plant
