| Bicameral | The legislative branch has two houses or bodies. |
| Great Compromise | The compromise that decided that compress would be split into two houses one with 2 reps. from every state and one with reps. based off of population. |
| House of Representatives | Based off of the states population, term is 2 years, minimum age is 25, must be a U.S citizen for 7 years, presiding officer is the speaker, presiding officer can vote on bills. Other officers: floor leader, whip. |
| Special Powers of the House | Choose president if no electoral majority, Start impeachment, Tax bills. |
| Senate | 2 senators per state, terms is 6 years, minimum age is 30, must be a citizen for 9 years, presiding officer is the Vice President, the presiding officer can only vote if it is a tie, other leaders: President Pro Temp. |
| Special Powers of the Senate | Approve treaties, approve presidential appointments, choose VP if no electoral majority, hold impeachment trial. |
| Expressed Powers | Those powers of the National Government that are spelled out in the constitution. |
| Implied Powers | Those delegated powers of the national government that are suggested by the expressed powers. |
| Denied Powers | Powers that are denied to the government. |
| Federalism | A form of government where a constitution divides the powers between the national and state governments. |
| Reserved Powers | Those powers that the constitution does not grant to the federal government, but does not deny the states. |

| Pocket Veto | When the President puts a bill to the side and lets it die. Only during the last 10 days of the session. |
| Filibuster | Tactics used to defeat a bill in congress. Usually long speeches. |
| Override | 2/3 vote needed to override the president's veto. |
| Seniority Rule | Unwritten rule in both houses of congress reserving the top positions for members with the longest records. |
| Quorum | The least number of members who must be present for a legislative body. |
| Speaker | The presiding officer of the House chosen from the majority party. |
| Whips | People who round up votes for a bill to pass or to keep it from passing. |
| Elastic Clause | Necessary and Proper clause. |
