| electoral college | Those who have the formal duty of choosing the U S president. |
| incumbent | The person presently holding an office. |
| liberal | A person wanting government to be an important part of the economy. |
| media | The communication system, including television, newspapers, and radio. |
| nominee | The candidate chosen by the party to run in the general election |
| platform | The official party position on public issues. The position on each public issue is called a plank. |
| politician | A person elected to public office or active in politics. |
| primary | System of choosing party candidates to run in a general election. |
| voting qualifications | Requirements that must be met to be a voter. |
