15 vocabulary words commonly associated with elections

QuestionAnswer
absentee voting Allows a person to vote by mail rather than at the polls.
ballot List of candidates to be selected by voters in the election.
campaign Process for electing a candidate
candidate A person running for office.
conservative A person who wants limited government involvement in the economy.
democracy Government by the people
electoral college Those who have the formal duty of choosing the U S president.
incumbent The person presently holding an office.
liberal A person wanting government to be an important part of the economy.
media The communication system, including television, newspapers, and radio.
nominee The candidate chosen by the party to run in the general election
platform The official party position on public issues. The position on each public issue is called a plank.
politician A person elected to public office or active in politics.
primary System of choosing party candidates to run in a general election.
voting qualifications Requirements that must be met to be a voter.
