What is the set of electors called that cast the official votes for Prez and VP every 4 years called? the Electoral College
How many Electoral College electors are there for each state ? the same numbers as representatives each state has in Congress
Why did the framers devise the Electoral College They thought the citizens of such a large country would not know the best candidates
How long do federal judges hold office? as long as they have "good behavior" (unless impeached and convicted of treason, bribery, or other high crimes"
Are federal judges elected ? No, they are appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate
Name the six shared powers Veto, Appointments, Treaties,War, Impeachment, and judicial review
How is war a shared power? Prez= commander in chief, but only Congress can declare war, and they control the $$
What was the most divisive issue at the Constitutional Convention? Slavery
what is an act of a legislature that punishes an individual or group without a trial called? Bill of attainder
what is a law called that criminalizes an act that was not a crime when committed, or increases the penalty for a crime after it was committed? ex post facto law
what is it called when a member withdraws from an alliance, federation, or association? Secede
what is the clause in the Constitution called that states that federal laws are teh 'supreme law of the land" ? the supremacy clause
what is a tax on imported or exported goods called ? a tariff (or a duty)
Can the national gov't pass ex post facto laws or bills of attainder? No
How many times does the word "slave" or "slavery" appear in the Constitution? Zero (slavery was not directly addressed)
How did the Constitution protect slavery? 1. fugitive slave clause (escaped slaves had to go back to owner 2. it promised that the federal gov't would not interfere with importing slaves to the US until 1808. (20 years)
what are some things that states can't do (per constitution) coin own money, pass laws that violate contracts, treaties with foreign countries, declare war, grant titles of nobility, lay duties, unfairly discriminate against citizens of other states, refuse to return fugitives
