direct democracy. Government in which ALL citizens vote on the laws and run the government.
republic. Government in which citizens ELECT representatives to make government decisions for them.
justinian. An emperor who had Roman laws into a code (book of laws).
John Cocke. English philosopher who developed the idea of social contract.
Montes Quieu. philosopher who said that the best way to limit government is to separate power.
Magna Carta. Document in England (1215) that increased peoples' rights; we borrowed the idea of "rule of law" from this document.
Code of Hammurabi. first written code of laws.
rule of law. idea found in Magna Carta that says citizens AND the government must obey the laws.
common laws. Body of law based on COURT DECISIONS instead of written laws; borrowed this idea from England
precedent A decision made in a court case that is used to decide future cases
parliament. The group of legislators who made the laws in England.
congres. legislative (lawmaking) body in the United States today.
House of Burgess first government in Jamestown, Virginia-- it was a form of REPRESENTATIVE democracy.
plantation. large farms in the south, many of these farms had slaves.
Triangular Trade Route Route between Europe, Africa and the Americas in which many different goods were traded.
Neglected the middle part of shipping rout in which slaves were treated badly on ships.
Writs of assistance search warrants that allowed the British to search whatever they wanted for whatever reason.
consent. this means to agree
dissent this means to disagree
proclamation of 1763 British law that prohibited the colonists from crossing beyond the Appalachian Mountains.
tea party to protest British taxes the colonists dressed as Indians and threw the taxed tea into Boston Harbor
Boston Massacre the shot fired in Lexington between British troops &colonial militia; started Revolutionary war
Thomas Jefferson the main author (writer) of the Declaration of Independence.
continental army the army by the 13 colonies.
