Pelvic Girdle | consists of 2 hip/coxal bones; attaches lower limbs to the trunk |
Hip bone/coxal bone | each bone unites w/ its partner anteriorly and with the sacrum posteriorly. 3 major portions-ilium, pubis, ischium |
Ilium | flaring, largest, superior portion of hip bone. Articulates w/ sacrum to form sacroiliac joint. |
Iliac crest | superior ridge of ilium |
Greater sciatic notch | deep indentation on posterior edge of ilium through which the sciatic nerve courses to the posterior thigh |
Pubis | anterior, inferior portion of hip bone. Articulates with other hip bone to form a cartilaginous joint called the pubic symphasis |
Pubic symphasis | cartilaginous joint between the hip bones |
Ischium | posterior, inferior portion of hip bone |
Ischial tuberosity | big bump that bears your weight when you’re sitting and serves as an attachment site (the origin) for the hamstring muscles |
Ischial spine | sharp point that angles into the pelvic outlet and can hinder delivery |
Acetabulum | deep socket in hip bone where the ilium, pubis, and ischium meet, and with which the head of the femur articulates to form the essence of the hip joint |
Obturator foramen | very large opening in hip bone |
