Question | Answer |
articulations | functional junctions between bones |
fibrous joints | dense connective tissue |
syndesmosis | bones are bound by long fibers of connective tissue that form an interosseous ligament |
suture | broad margins of adjacent bones grow together and unite by a thin layer of dense connective tissue |
gomphosis | a joint formed by the union of a cone-shaped body process in a body socket. |
cartilaginous joints | hyaline cartilage or fibrocartilage that connects bones |
synchondrosis | bands of hyaline cartilage unite the bones |
synovial joints | joints of the skeletal system that allow free movement |
articular cartilage | resists wear and minimizes friction when it is compressed as the joint moves |
joint capsule | two distinct layers taht holds together bones of a synovial joint |
ligaments | bundles of strong tough collagenous fibers |
synovial membrane | covers all of the surfaces within the joint capsule |
synovial fluid | a clear viscuous fluid |
menisci | disc of fibrocartilage that divides the synovial joints |
bursae | a fluid filled sac associated with synovial joints |
ball and socket joint | consists of a bone with an egg shpaed edd that articulates within the cup shapedcavity of another bone |
condyloid joint | ovoid condyle of one bone |
gliding joints | allow sliding or back and forth motion and twisting movements |
hinge joint | convex surface of one bone that fits into a concave surface |
pivot joint | cylndrical surface of one bone rotates within a ring formed of bone and fiburous tissue |
saddle joint | between bones whose articulating surfaces have both concave and convex regions |
flexion | bending parts at a joint so that the angle between them decreases |
extension | straightening parts at a joint so that the angle between them increases |
hyperextension | excess extension of teh parts at a joint |
dorsiflexion | bending the foot at the ankle toward the shin |
plantar flexion | bending the foot at the ankle toward the sole |
abduction | moving a part away from the midline |
adduction | moving a part toward the midline |
rotation | moving a part around an axis |
circumduction | moving a part so that its end follows a circular path |
supination | turning the hand so the palm is upward |
pronatino | turning the hand so the palm is downward or facing posteriorly |
eversion | turning the foot so the sole faces laterally |
