Question | Answer |
Feudalism | A political system where nobles gave land to less powerful nobles in return for services. |
Medieval | Period of history between the fall of the Roman Empire and the beginning of the modern world. |
Fief | Piece or parcel of land granted to a vassal by his lord. |
Vassal | Noble who accepts land from a King, Queen, or more powerful noble. |
Serfs | Peasants who belonged to the fief on which they lived. Not slaves, but they were not free to leave the land with out permission. |
Manorialism | System where the lord protects peasants and their land to return for food and work. |
Self-sufficient | don not require any outside assistance. |
Guild | Similar to a modern trade union, a guild protected workers' rights, set wages and prices, and settled disputes. |
Magna Carta | Also known as the great Charter, this document limited the king's power and gave nobles a larger role in the government. |
The Crusades | A series of expeditions from the 11th to 13th centuries by Western European Christians to capture the Holy Lands from Muslims. |
