Feudalism A political system where nobles gave land to less powerful nobles in return for services.
Medieval Period of history between the fall of the Roman Empire and the beginning of the modern world.
Fief Piece or parcel of land granted to a vassal by his lord.
Vassal Noble who accepts land from a King, Queen, or more powerful noble.
Serfs Peasants who belonged to the fief on which they lived. Not slaves, but they were not free to leave the land with out permission.
Manorialism System where the lord protects peasants and their land to return for food and work.
Self-sufficient don not require any outside assistance.
Guild Similar to a modern trade union, a guild protected workers' rights, set wages and prices, and settled disputes.
Magna Carta Also known as the great Charter, this document limited the king's power and gave nobles a larger role in the government.
The Crusades A series of expeditions from the 11th to 13th centuries by Western European Christians to capture the Holy Lands from Muslims.
