latitude | the location north or south of the equator. |
longitde | the location east or west of the equator. |
parallel | the line representing the circle on a map or graph. |
meridian | a great circle of the earth passing through the poles and any given point on the earth's surface. |
degree | any of a series of steps or stages, as in a process or course of action, a point in any scale. |
minute | an exact point in time; instant;moment. |
hemisphere | one half of the eaarth, divided by the equator into northern and southern halves, or by the 0 degrees and 100 degrees meridians into eastern and western halves. |
equator | the imaginary line at 0 degrees latitude that divides the earth into to a northern half, the Northern Hemisphere, and he southern half, the Southern Hemisphere. |
prime meridian | the imaginary line at 0 degrees longitude. |
projection | the transfer of an imageof a curved surface onto a flat surface. |
physical map | a general purpose map that shows the natural features of an area. |
topography | the physical features of the earth's surface and their relationships to ne another in terms of location and elevation. |
political map | a general purpose map that shows both the topography and recognized boundries of an area. |
legend | an explanation of a map's symbols and scale. |
symbol | pictures that epresent what the legend syas. |
Tropic of Cancer | located at 0 degrees latitude above the equator. It is when the sun is directly over head at noon. |
Tropic of Capricorn | located at 23degrees30's. Marks the Southernmost where this occurs. |
Artic Circle | marks the northernmost point where the sun can be seen in the winter. |
Antartic Circle | marks the southernmost point in which the sun can be seen in the winter. |
solstice | Happens every year on december 21 and is when the sun never sets south of the Antiartic Circle. |
