epidermis characteristics | stratified squamous epithelium, for hair follicles and sebaceous glands |
epidermis protective functions | shields moist under tissues from H2O loss; when unbroken, keeps out harmful micro-organisms |
stratum basale | bottom layer of epidermis |
langerhans cells | white blood cells- macrophages |
melanocytes | located in deeper epidermis & produced by hypodermis |
albinism | lack of ability to produce melanin |
carotene | found in palms & soles of feet and causes yellowish hue in asians |
hemoglobin | red blood cells causes pinkish hue to fair skinned people |
stratum corneum | top layer of epidermis |
dermis | binds epidermis to subcutaneous |
nerve fibers | sensory receptors and motor fibers to send and recieve impulses |
hypodermis | subcutaneous tissue- lies beneath the dermis |
