Question | Answer |
endocrine glands | produces secretions, which are released directly into the surrounding interstitial fluid |
Cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) | Transmembrane proteins which bind to each other and to extracellular materials |
hyaluronan (hyaluronic acid) | polysaccharide derivatives contained inside of intercellular cement |
germinative cells | most stem cells that are located near the basal lamina, in a relatively protected location |
exocrine glands | produce exocrine secretions, which are discharged onto an epithelial surface |
gap junction | where two cells are held together by interlocking junctional proteins called connexons |
occluding (tight) junctions | where the lipid portions of the two plasma membranes are tightly bound together by interlocking membrane proteins; adhesion belt forms a band that encircles cells and binds them to their neighbors |
Intercellular cement | a thin layer of proteoglycans that contain polysaccharide derivatives; may bond membranes of adjacent cells |
basal lamina | aka basement membrane. a complex structure produced by the basal surface of the epithelium and the underlying connective tissue |
Glands | Structures that produce fluid secretions; they are either attached to or derived from epithelia |
desmosome | where CAMs and proteoglycans link the opposing plasma membranes. very strong and can resist stretching and twisting |
cell junctions | specializd areas of the plasma membrane that attach a cell to another cell or to extracellular materials |
