| Classification | Fat-soluble (A, D, E and K), Water-soluble (B group and C) |
| Vitamin A | Pure vitamin A - good eyesight, healthy linings of the nose, mouth and throat, growth, healthy eyes, skin and hair. Sources: oily fish, liver, eggs, butter; carotene - carrots, peppers, dark green vegetables |
| Vitamin D | Works with calcium and is essential for strong bones and teeth. Deficiency: rickets, tooth decay, osteoporosis and osteomalacia. Sources: sunshine, oily fish, tinned fish, cheese, butter, eggs, margarines |
| Vitamin E | Protects against heat disease, needed for healthy skin. Sources: seeds, nuts and cereals |
| Vitamin K | Normal blood clotting. sources green vegetables, milk, cheese, made by the healthy bacteria in the intestines |
| B group | Control the energy released from food and needed for a healthy nervous system. Deficiency can cause beriberi and pellagra. Sources: meat, eggs, fortified cereals |
| Folate or folic acid | Needed before and during pregnancy to prevent spina bifida. Sources: wholemeal bread, fortified products, vitamin supplements |
| Vitamin C | General health, healing of wounds, absorption of iron. Deficiency: scurvy and anaemia. Sources: fruits and vegetables |
