What is a joint? | a place where two bones come together, permitting the bones to move without damaging each other. Joints also hold bones in place. |
What is an immovable joint? | a fixed joint, it allows no movement between bones |
What is a slightly movable joint? | permits a small amount of movement between the bones |
What are the types of freely movable joints? | Ball and socket joint, hinged joint, pivot joint, gliding joint, saddle joint, ellipsoid joint |
What is a ligament? | the fibrous tissue that connects bones. Also called articular ligaments |
What is a tendon? | a tendon (or sinew) is a tough band of fibrous connective tissue that connects muscle to bone or muscle to muscle and is designed to withstand tension |
What is cartilage? | a tough material that cushions and protects the ends of bones. When it degenerates, arthritis develops. Harder than ligaments, softer than bone. |
What is synovial fluid? | a clear fluid secreted by membranes; it functions as a lubricant in joint cavities, tendon sheaths, and the bursa |
What is the meniscus? | cartilage tissue that protects and helps promote flexibility between joints |
What is the synovial membrane? | a sac that surrounds and protects each joint. Secretes synovial fluid. |
What is the bursa? | a small fluid sac between a muscle and a tendon to ease movement |
