Elements or Compounds | Primary Role |
Oxygen | Required for the chemical reaction that releases energy from nutrients; one of the atoms in a water molecule; a key element in other compounds of importance to the body |
Carbon dioxide | Given off as a waste product of cell respiration |
Water | Dissolves substances to make the more usable to the body; provides fluid to lubricate moving parts of the body; helps to maintain body temperature |
Glucose | Serves as the primary energy source for the cells |
anatomy | the study of structur of body parts to include size, shape, composition and the relationship among structures |
physiology | the study of the function of body parts(tells what they do and how they do it |
How are anatomy and physiology related | closely associated since the function of a body part is determined by the structure of the body parts |
chemical | consists of all chemicals that make up the body(can be divided into organic and inorganic compounds) |
four main organic compounds | carbohydrates, protein, lipids, and nucleic acids |
four main inorganic compounds | water, carbon dioxide, oxygen and minerals(salt) |
cellular | the cell is the basic structural and functional unit of the body, all metabolic reactions occur within the cells, cell composed of organelles that carry out specific functions, over 200 different types of cells |
tissue | similar cells grouped together to perform a particular function make up tissue |
four types of tissue | epithelia connective muscle and nervous tissue |
organ | made up of two or more different tissues that work together to perform a specific function |
organ system | made up of different organs that are arranged in functional groups so that the independent functions of the organs are coordinate to form specific tasks |
organism | the highest level of organization(the human body)all off the organization levels contribute to the functioning of the body as a whole unit and to the maintenance of homeostasis |
levels of organization (lowest to highest) | chemical, cellular, tissue, organ, organ system, organism |
endoplasmic reticulum | functions as a transport system |
golgi apparatus | functions to modify and package proteins |
