Term | Definition |
Primary source | items or information that are discovered from the time being studied |
secondary source | books or articles about the time being studied |
hand written sources | hand written documents include manuscripts. They include hand written diaries, letters, notebooks, etc. |
Printed | these includes books, newspaper, magazines, maps and government documents such as censuses (official population counts) |
Pictorial sources | these include photographs, paintings and document films |
Oral sources | these include eye-witness accounts, interviews, tape recordings and radio documentary programmes |
artefacts | an artefact is anything that has been made or used by people. books, pottery and tools are all examples of artefacts |
archives | house written documents |
art galleries | contain paintings and drawings which tell us about the past. |
prehistory | anything from before writing was invented |
rescue archaeology | archaeological remains are some times discovered in land clearing operations |
stratigraphy | artefacts found deeper beneath the surface are older than artefacts found above them in shallower ground |
carbon dating | when a plant or animal dies, carbon begins to leak out slowly from its body. by measuring the amount of carbon is left in a dead plant or animal, scientists can work out approximately when the plant or animal died |
pollen analysis | can be used to find out what plants grew long ago in an area. pollen grains can sometimes survive for thousand of years and can be studied under a microscope |
