Agonist | Role skeletal system plays in movement |
Antagonist | Role skeletal system plays in stopping movement |
Aponeurosis | Flat, sheetlike fibrous tissue that connects muscle or bone to other tissues |
Concentric | Contraction resulting in the shortening of a muscle |
Contractility | Ability to contract or shorten |
Eccentric | Contraction accompanied by the lengthening of a muscle |
Endomysium | Protective sheet of connective tissue around a skeletal muscle fiber |
Epimysium | Outermost sheath of a connective tissue that surrounds a skeletal muscle |
Extensibility | Ability to be stretched |
Fascicle | Bundle of muscle fibers |
Irritability | Ability to respond to a stimulus |
Isometric | Type of contraction that involves no change in muscle length |
Muscle Fiber | Individual skeletal muscle cell |
Perimysium | Connective tissue sheath that envelops each primary bundle if muscle fibers |
Peristalsis | Wave of symmetrical squeezing of the digestive tract walls that occurs during digestion |
Sarcolemma | Delicate membrane surrounding each muscle fiber |
Abduction | Away from body in frontal plane |
Adduction | Closer to body in frontal plane |
Circumduction | Rotational movement of a body segment |
Dorsiflexion | Top of foot towards lower leg |
Eversion | Sole of foot is rolled outwards |
Extension | Returns a body segment to anatomical position in the sagittal plane |
Flexion | Forward movement away from the sagittal plane |
Hyperextension | Backward movement away from the sagittal plane |
Insertion | Muscle attached to bone that tends to move when the muscle contracts |
Inversion | Sole of the foot is rolled inwards |
Lateral rotation | Outward movement in the transverse plane |
Medial Rotation | Inward movement in the transverse plane |
Opposition | Touching any fingers to your thumb |
Origin | Muscle attachment to a relatively fixed structure |
Plantar Flexion | Downward motion of the foot away from the lower leg |
Pronation | Medial rotation of the forearm |
Radial deviation | Rotation of hand towards the thumb |
Supination | Lateral rotation of the forearm |
Ulnar Deviation | Rotation of the hand toward the little finger |
Contusion | Bruising or bleeding within a muscle from impact |
DOMS | Muscle pain after a strenuous workout. Microscopic muscle tears |
Hernia | Muscles in the abdomen become weakened or tear |
Muscle Cramps | Moderate to severe muscle spasms causing pain |
Muscle Strain | An injury that occurs when a muscle is stretched beyond the limits to which it is accustomed |
Muscular Dystrophy | inherited disorders characterized by muscle weakness and loss of muscle tissue |
Myositis Ossificans | Condition in which a calcium mass forms within a muscle three to four weeks after a muscle injury |
Shin Splint | Pain localized to the anterior lower leg |
Tendinitis | Inflammation of a tendon, usually accompanied by pain and swelling |
Tendinosis | Degeneration of a tendon believed to be caused by micro tears in the tendon connective tissue. |
