Term | Definition |
Epidermis | the very top layer of the skin |
dermis | the middle layer of the skin containing fibroblasts |
hypodermis | the bottom layer of the skin, contains veins/arteries/fat |
1st degree burn | only affects the epidermis and causes redness with a little pain |
2nd degree burn | affects the epidermis and dermis, causes severe pain and leaves blisters |
3rd degree burn | affects the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis. Is not painful because the nerves are burned off causes no feeling. Sever blistering remains with waxy skin |
keratinocyte | 90% of the cells in the skin, hair, and nails. Helps make the skin waterproof and elastic. It is found in the hypodermis |
Melanocyte | Produces melanosomes that contain the protein melatonin that protect the keratinocytes from UV damage to the their nucleus. found in the hypodermis |
fibroblasts | found in the dermis, provide structural support that prevents wrinkles |
epi- | prefix that means above |
sebac- | prefix that means sebum (oil or wax) |
dermis- | prefix that means skin |
hypo- | prefix that means below or under |
lipo- | prefix that means fat |
cyte- | prefix that means cells |
