Question | Answer |
CNS | Central Nervous System - Brain and Spinal Cord . Responsible for Analysis of Information |
PNS | Peripheral Nervous System - Cranial and Spinal Nerves connecting to muscles, glands and receptors |
Cell Types | Neurons (Nerve Cells) and Glial Cells (Support/Caretaker Cells) |
Neurons | Receive information and communicate to other neurons, muscles or glands |
Anatomy of Neurons (Nerve Cell) | Cell Body (Soma), Nucleus, Dendrites, Axon, neurofibrils, and Axon Terminals |
Dendrites | The "Antenna". Receives input from neurons and conducts impulses TOWARD THE CELL BODY |
Axon | The "Telephone Line". receives input from the dendrites and conducts impulses AWAY FROM THE CELL BODY |
Axon Terminals | Branches and bulbs at the end of the axon. Synapses onto other nerve cells. |
Neurofibrils | Provide structural support for the Axon |
Glial Cells | Support/Caretaker Cells. Include Schwann Cell and Astrocytes |
Schwann Cells | Produce Myelin which wrap around the axon and speeds up transmission of the nerve signal |
Astrocytes | Regulation of neurons in the CNS. Regulates blood flow in the brain, maintains composition of fluid and communication between neurons. |
