Term | Definition |
Alimentary canal/gastrointestinal tract | The term to describe the overall set of organs and tube that makes up the digestive system. The tube begins with the mouth and ends with the anus. |
Functions of digestive system | 1) Ingest food 2) Break food down into small molecules 3) absorb nutrients from molecules 4) eliminate non-digestible wastes. |
Mouth/Oral Cavity | Parts of mouth: teeth, tongue, salivary glands, hard and soft palate, uvula. |
Saliva | A mixture of mucous and water that contains bicarbonate and salivary amylase to begin breaking down carbohydrates. |
Pharynx | The area where the food passage and air passage cross. Composed of three parts: nasopharynx, oropharynx, and the laryngopharynx. |
Bolus | The technical term for the swallowed item, whether it is food or drink. |
Layers of the stomach | mucosa, submucosa, muscularis, and serosa |
Esophagus | The muscular tube that lies posterior to the trachea. The passage way of food from the pharynx to the stomach. |
Peristalsis | The rhythmic contraction that pushes food along the alimentary canal. |
