Term | Definition |
Tidal volume | The small amount of air that moves in and out of our lungs at rest. About 500 ml. |
Vital capacity | The maximum amount of air that can be moved in and out of the lungs in a single breath. |
Inspiratory reserve volume | Caused by forced inspiration where more air is inhaled beyond the tidal volume |
Expiratory reserve volume | Forcing more air out beyond the tidal volume. |
Residual volume | The air that remains in the alveoli after expiration. Around 1,000 ml. |
Primary respiratory center | located in the medulla oblonngata of the brain. |
Pons | Part of the brain stem that regulates automatic rhythmic breathing. |
Eupnea | The pattern of normal quiet breathing. |
