Bone | Description |
Cervical Vertebrae | smallest vertebrae, spinous process forks, look for transverse foramina |
Transverse Foramina | two small holes on transverse process of cervical vertebrae for cranial nerves |
Atlas | first cervical vertebra, has no body, articulates with occipital condyles |
Axis | second cervical vertebra, has dens |
Dens | knoblike projection on axis; atlas rotates around dens (Remember Atlas rotates around Axis just like Earth rotates around an axis!...Atlas = Earth) |
Thoracic Vertebrae | looks like a giraffe from the side; long, downward slanting spinous process |
Articular Facets | smooth area on tips of tranverse processes of thoracic vertebrae where the ribs articulate |
Lumbar Vertebrae | larger vertebrae; looks like a moose from the side, spinous process is much larger and projects straight back |
Sacrum | Large triangular bone with holes |
Coccyx | "tail bone", hangs off sacrum |
Ribs | C-shaped bones |
Sternum | looks like a necktie |
Manubrium | most superior part of sternum; the "knot" of the necktie |
Body | rectangular main portion |
Xiphoid Process | small projection at inferior end of sternum |
Sternal Angle | ridge between manubrium and body |
