Term | Definition |
Origin | The part of the muscle that attaches to a bone that does not move during the contraction. |
Insertion | The point where a muscle connects to a bone that moves during contraction. |
Prime Mover/Agonist | The muscle that does most of the work when completing a movement. |
Synergists | Muscles that assist the prime mover in a movement. |
Antagonists | Muscles that work and move in opposite directions to other muscles. All muscles are paired to have an antagonist. |
Naming Muscles | Muscles are named by size, shape, direction of fibers, location, attachment, number of attachments, and action. |
