| executive order | a rule or command that has force of law |
| pardon | a declaration of freedom and forgiveness from punishment |
| reprieve | an order to delay a person's punishment until a higher court hears the case |
| amnesty | a pardon to a group of people |
| foreign policy | a nation's overall plan for dealing with other nations |
| treaties | formal agreements between the governments of 2 or more countries |
| executive agreement | an agreement between the president and the leader of another country |
| ambassador | an official representative of a country's government |
| embargo | an argument to stop trade with a certain nation |
| cabinet | a group of advisors to the president that includes the heads of 15 top-level executive departments |
| federal bureaucracy | the collective agencies and employees of the executive branch |
| War Powers Resolution | Law that requires the president to notify Congress within 48 hours of sending troops to battle and giving 60 days to get Congressional approval to stay or declare war. |
