Popular Sovereignty | political theory that government is subject to the will of the people |
Border Ruffians | People from Missouri who traveled to Kansas to vote in the election |
Arsenal | a storage place for weapons and ammunition |
Martyr | a person who dies for a principal or cause |
Secession | to secede, i.e. from another country |
States' Rights | the belief that states' rights supersede federal rights and law |
Border State | a state between the North and South that debated joining the Confederacy. |
Blockade | to prevent supplies from going in and out of an area by military force |
Offensive | a position of attacking |
Rebel | a Confederate soldier |
Yankee | Union soldier |
Blockade Runner | a ship that sails in and out of a blockaded area |
Ironclad | an armored naval vessel |
Casualty | a military person killed, wounded, or captured |
Emancipate | to free from slavery |
Ratify | to give official approval to, i.e. by congressional decision |
Habeas Corpus | legal inquiry into whether or not a person has been legally imprisoned |
Draft | the selection process of persons for military service |
Bounty | money given as a reward |
Greenback | a piece of U.S. paper money first issued by the North during the Civil War |
Inflation | a rise in the price of goods and services-the devaluation of money |
Entrenched | occupying a strong defensive position |
Total War | a war on all aspects of the enemy's life |
