Sectionalism | Lloyalty to the interests of one's own region or section of the country, rather than to the country as a whole |

Border Ruffians | pro-slavery activists from the slave state of Missouri, who in 1854 to 1860 crossed the state border into Kansas Territory, to force the acceptance of slavery there |
Arsenal | a place of storage containing arms and military equipment for land or naval service |
Martyr | a person who willingly suffers death rather than renounce his or her religion |
Secession | the withdrawal from the Union of 11 Southern states in the period 1860–61, which brought on the Civil War |
States rights | the rights belonging to the various states, especially with reference to the strict interpretation of the Constitution |
Border states | the slave states of Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky, and Missouri, which refused to secede from the Union in 1860–61 |
Blockade | the isolating, closing off, or surrounding of a place, as a port, harbor, or city, by hostile ships or troops to prevent entrance or exit |

Rebel | a person who refuses allegiance to, resists, or rises in arms against the government or ruler of his or her country |
Yankee | a native or inhabitant of the United States |
Blockade Runner | a ship or person that passes through a blockade |

Emancipate | to free (a slave) from bondage |

Habeas Corpus | a writ requiring a person to be brought before a judge or court |
Draft | A system for selecting young men for compulsory military service |
Bounty | a payment or reward often offered by a group as an incentive for the accomplishment of a task |
Greenback | paper currency (printed in green on the back) issued by the United States during the American Civil War |
Inflation | a sustained increase in the general price level of goods and services in an economy over a period of time |
Entrenched | to place in a position of strength |
Total War | a war that is unrestricted in terms of the weapons used, the territory or combatants involved, or the objectives pursued, especially one in which the laws of war are disregarded. |
