Treaty of paris, 1763 | Treaty that ended the French and Indian War, after which the British began taxing the colonists to pay for the war |
Proclamation of 1763 | Act that stated that colonists could not settle west of the Appalachian mountains because King George could not afford to protect them |

Northwest Ordinance | Act that provided a method for admitting new states to the Union, no slavery was permitted |
Articles of Confederation | First government of the US, was weak in that the government couldn't tax, there was no army to put down a rebellion, only one branch of government |
Constitutional Convention | Delegates met in Philadelphia to write a new Constitution |
Shays Rebellion | A rebellion over taxes that exposed the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation |
War of 1812 | War fought after Britain tried to prevent US from trading, and impressed US sailors into British Navy |
"Era of Good Feelings" | Period of time after the US was victorious in the War of 1812, proved US could protect itself |
Popular Sovereignty | Idea that government was created by people who have the power |
