Fugitive | A runaway. |
Compromise of 1850 | Contained the main 5 points of Clay's plan, and was a final settlement of the dispute between the North and South. |
Abstain | Not to cast votes. |
Popular Sovereignty | Allowing the people to decide. |
Border Ruffians | Missourians who traveled in armed groups to vote in election. |
Arsenal | A storage place for weapons and ammunition. |
Martyr | A person who dies for a great cause. |
The Election of 1856 | Republican candidate- John C. Frémont Democratic candidate- James Buchanan |
Secession | The withdrawal from the Union. |
Kansas-Nebraska Act | Plan to make the area west of Missouri and Iowa, into Kansas and Nebraska. |
Fugitive-Slave Act | Required all citizens to help catch runaway slaves. North was angered by this. |
John Brown | An abolitionist, believed that God had chosen him to end slavery. He targeted a raid on an arsenal, wanted to start a rebellion by armed African Americans. He killed 5 proslavery people, some called him a martyr. This was exactly what Southerners feared. |

Yankees | Soldiers of the Union. |
Free-Soil Party | New political party formed in 1848. They stated, free soil, free speech, free labor, and free men. Party consisted of former Democrats, and Whigs. |
Dred Scott | Was an enslaved African American who lived in a slave state, then moved to the free state of Illinois, but then back to a slave state. He claimed that he should be free since he once lived in a free state. His case later moved to the Supreme Court. |
Chief Justice Roger B. Taney | Was the chief in Dred Scott's case. He stated that Dred Scott was "property" and Congress can't take away anyone's property. He even said that the Missouri Compromise was unconstitutional, and Congress can't prohibit slavery in any territory. |
Abraham Lincoln | Won the election of 1860. He believed that slavery was wrong, and was a successful lawyer. |

54th Massachusetts | Led by white abolitionists, they attacked a Confederate fortification. Their courage won respect for African American soldiers. However, the South was angered by the African American soldiers and they made threats to execute any who were captured. |
States' Rights | Rights and powers independent of the federal government that are reserved for the states by the Constitution; the belief that states' rights supersede federal rights and law. |
Sectionalism | Exaggerated loyalty to a specific part of a country. |
Border State | The states between the North and South that were divided over whether to stay in the Union or join the Confederacy. |

Offensive | Went on the attack. |
Rebel | Confederate soldiers. |
Blockade Runners | Confederate ships. |
Ironclad | Armored naval vessel. |
Casualty | People who are killed or injured. |

Habeas Corpus | The right that guarantees accused individuals to a hearing before going to jail. |
Draft | The selection of people for a military service. |
Bounty | A payment to encourage volunteers. |
Greenback | Northern money. |
Inflation | A general increase in prices. |
Entrenched | Set up in a strong position. |
Total War | War on all aspects of enemy's life |
