LIGAMENT | LOCATION | FUNCTION |
Inferior Pubic Ligament | B/T inferior pubic rami | Strengthens inferior portion of pubic symphysis |
Superior Pubic Ligament | Attaches to pubic tubercles | Strengthens superior and anterior portions of pubic symphysis |
Iliolumbar Ligament | TVP of L5 to ala of sacrum | Limits rotation of L5 on S1. Prevents L5 from moving anterior on S1. |
Sacrospinous Ligament | Lower, lateral sacrum and coccyx (posterior), attaches to ischial spine | This along with the Sacrotuberous ligament converts the greater sciatic notch into a foramen for passage of the sciatic nerve |
Sacrotuberous Ligament | B/T PSIS & PIIS, posterior surface of sacrum & coccyx. Come together on ischial tuberosity | VERY STRONG, attachment for gluteus maximus, Prevents forward rotation of the sacrum |
Long Posterior Sacroiliac Ligament | B/T PSIS & Lower portion of sacrum | Prevents downward movement of sacrum |
Short Posterior Sacroiliac Ligament | B/T ilium & Upper sacrum on dorsal surface | Prevents forward movement of sacrum |
Interosseous Sacroiliac Ligament | Connects tuberosities of ilium to sacrum | STRONGEST |
Anterior Sacroiliac Ligament | Connects ala & pelvic surface of sacrum to auricular surface of ilium | Provides stability to the joint anteriorly |
Iliofemoral Ligament | Limits Hyperextension of Hip | |
Pubofemoral Ligament | Acetabular labrum to superior ramus of pubis and neck of femur | Limits Hyperextension and abduction of hip |
Ischiofemoral Ligament | Ischial portion of acetabulum to femoral neck | Limits hyperextension and medial rotation of the hip |
Deltoid Ligament | Through calcaneus, navicular, talus, and attaches to the tibia | Helps support medial longitudinal arch |
Lateral Ligament | Calcaneus, Talus, and fibula | Provides support to the lateral longitudinal arch |
Spring Ligament | Calcaneus to Navicular | Supports medial side of medial longitudinal arch |
Long Plantar Ligament | Calcaneus, cuboid, base of 3-5 MT | Primary support of lateral longitudinal arch |
Short Plantar Ligament | Calcaneus to cuboid | Supports lateral longitudinal arch |
Plantar Aponeurosis | Calcaneus to proximal phalanges | Supports arches, keeps posterior segments from separating from anterior segments. |
Anterior Cruciate Ligament | From ant. tibia to post. femur | Provides support in sagittal plane, keeps femur from displacing posteriorly on tibia, tightens during extension |
Posterior Cruciate Ligament | From post. tibia to ant. femur | Provides stability in sagittal plane, prevents femur from displacing anteriorly on tibia, tightens during flexion |
Medial Collateral Ligament | Tibia and medial epicondyle and medial meniscus | Provides medial stability in the frontal plane |
Lateral Collateral Ligament | Fibula, lateral epicondyle | Provides lateral stability in the frontal plane |
Medial and Lateral Meniscus | Superior surface of tibia | Shock absorption, deepen joint surface |
Medial Collateral Ligament in elbow | Medial epicondyle of humerus to medial side of coronoid process and olecranon process | Provides medial stability |
Lateral Collateral Ligament in elbow | Lateral epicondyle of humerus to annular ligament and lateral ulna | Provides lateral stability |
Annular Ligament | Ant. and Post. to radial notch of ulna. Encompasses head of radius | Holds head of radius against ulna |
Radial Collateral Ligament | Styloid process of radius to scaphoid and trapezium | Provides lateral stability |
Ulnar Collateral Ligament | Styloid process of ulna to pisifrom and triquetrum | Provides medial stability |
Palmar Radiocarpal Ligament | Ant. surface of distal radius and ulna to anterior surface of proximal carpal bones and capitate in distal row | Thick, Tough, Limits wrist extension |
Dorsal Radiocarpal Ligament | Post. surface of distal radius to post. scaphoid, lunate and triquetrum | Limits wrist flexion |
Articular Disk | Distal end of ulna to triquetrum and lunate | Shock absorption, filler *ulna shorter than radius* |
Palmar Fascia | Palm of hand | Thick, provides protection for structures of the palm |
Flexor Retinaculum | Anterior surface | Holds flexor tendons against wrist, prevents carpal bones from separating |
Palmar Carpal Ligament | Part of flexor retinaculum, styloid process of radius and ulna | same as flexor retinaculum |
Transverse Carpal Ligament | Part of flexor retinaculum, Pisiform, hook of hamate (medially), Scaphoid, trapezium (Laterally) | Forms tunnel for tendons and median nerve *Carpal Tunnel* |
Extensor Retinaculum | Posterior, Styloid process of ulna medially, triquetrum, pisiform, and lateral side of radius | Holds extensor tendons close to wrist |
Costoclavicular Ligament | Clavicle to costal cartilage of 1st rib | Limits amount of clavicular elevation |
Interclavicular Ligament | Top of manubrium connecting sternal ends of clavicles | Limits amount of clavicular depression |
Sternoclavicular Ligament | B/T Sternum and clavicle | Reinforces Joint Capsule |
Coracoclavicular Ligament | Coracoid process and clavicle - Trapezoid laterally, Conoid medially | Provides stability |
Coracoacromial Ligament | Coracoid and acromion | Protective arch over head of humerus |
