Term | Definition |
parietal bone | paired bones that form most of the upper and side walls of the cranium |
frontal bone | forms the forehead, bony projections of the eyebrows, and upper parts of the eye sockets |
temporal bone | paired bones that life behind the parietal bones |
occipital bone | forms the base and back wall of the skull |
sphenoid bone | a bone that spans the width of the skull and forms part of the floor of the cranial cavity. It has many canals that nerves run through. |
ethmoid bone | very irregularly shaped and forms the roof of the nasal cavity and part of the inner eye sockets |
zygomatic bone | cheekbones and from part of the lower eye sockets |
lacrimal bone | fingernail sized bones that form part of the inner eye sockets, they have a groove that allow tears to pass |
nasal bone | smooth rectangle bones that form the bridge of the nose |
vomer bone | the single bone in the middle of the nasal cavity, it forms most of the bony nasal septum |
inferior nasal concha | thin curved bones in the nasal cavity and are actually part of the ethmoid bone |
mandible | the lower jaw bone and the largest and strongest bone of the face, it holds your lower teeth |
maxilla | fuse to form the upper jaw, all facial bones join the maxilla except the mandible so they are called the "keystone" bones of the face. it holds your upper teeth. |
