Social Contract | an agreement between a people and their government or ruler, stating that if a government (or ruler) did not protect citizens and their rights, they were justified in overthrowing it |
Great Awakening | a religious movement in the American colonies in the 1730s and 1740s |
Jonathan Edwards | a Puritan leader of the Great Awakening who emphasized the individual's personal relationship with God and appealed to his listeners' fears and emotions |
George Whitefield | a Methodist minister who traveled to America to try and get people to feel the religious spirit |
