Benjamin Franklin one of the most famous Americans in history.
Enlightenment movement that begins in Europe in the late 1600s as people began examining the natural world, society, and government; also called the Age of Reason
Social Contract an agreement between a people and their government or ruler, stating that if a government (or ruler) did not protect citizens and their rights, they were justified in overthrowing it
Great Awakening a religious movement in the American colonies in the 1730s and 1740s
Jonathan Edwards a Puritan leader of the Great Awakening who emphasized the individual's personal relationship with God and appealed to his listeners' fears and emotions
George Whitefield a Methodist minister who traveled to America to try and get people to feel the religious spirit
