Valve/Vessel | Function |
tricuspid valve (between right atrium and right ventricle) | prevents blood from moving from right ventricle back into right atrium during ventricular contraction |
pulmonary semilunar valve (between right ventricle and pulmonary artery during ventricular relation) | prevents blood from moving back from pulmonary artery into right ventricle |
bicuspid (mitral) valve (between left atrium and left ventricle) | prevents blood from moving from left ventricle during ventricular contraction |
aortic semilunar valve (between left ventricle and aorta) | prevents blood from moving back from aorta into the left ventricle during ventricular relaxation |
artery | carries high-pressure blood from heart to arterioles |
arteriole | connects artery to capillary; helps to control blood flow into capillary by underdoing vasoconstriction or vasodilation |
capillary | provides semipermeable membrane through which nutrients, gases, and wastes are exchanged between blood and tissues cells; connects arteriole to venule |
venule | connects capillary to vein |
vein | carries low-pressure blood from venule to heart; valves prevent backflow of blood; serves as blood reservoir |
