| Integumentary system | consists of skin and its derivatives (sweat and oil glands, hairs, and nails) |
| Skin layers | Epidermis, dermis, hypodermis |
| Epidermis | the most superficial layer of the skin, made up of avascular, epithelial tissue (keratinized stratified squamous), contains keratinocytes, melanocytes, merkel's cells, and langerhan's |
| Dermis | made up of vascular, connective tissue |
| Hypodermis | (superficial fascia) made up of a loose connective tissue (areolar, adipose) anchors the skin to the underlying organs yet allows for free movement; acts as a shock absorber and insulator |
| Epidermal Layers | stratum basale, stratum spinosum, stratum granulosum, stratum lucidum, stratum corncum, stratum germinativum |
| stratum basale | single row of mostly columnar keratinocytes; contains Merkel's cells (touch) and melanocytes; the number of melanoctyes doesn't vary, but instead the amount of pigment differs |
| stratum spinosum | contains keratinocytes and Langerhans' cells |
| stratum granulosum | 2-3 layers of cells; keratinization begins here |
| stratum lucidum | contains a few rows of keratinocytes; found only in thick skin |
| stratum corncum | 20-30 cell layers thick; makes up 3/4 of the epidermis |
| stratum germinativum | area where epidermal cells are made made up of stratum basale and stratum spinosum |
| Dermis | contains all three types of fibers (collagen, elastin, and reticular) contains hair, follicles, oil and sweat glands |
| Dermal layers | papillary layer and reticular layer |
| papillary layer | made up of those connective tissue, very vascular, has extensions called dermal papillae that protrude into the epidermis, these projections are arranged in a series of looped and whorled ridges, they serve to increase friction and enhance gripping |
