Axis powers | The three nations that were allied that were Germany, Italy, and Tokyo |
Anschluss | The union of Germany and Austria |
Nazi-soviet pact | Bound hitler and Stalin to peaceful relations |
Holocaust | The systematic genocide of about six million Jews by the nazis |
Lend-lease Act | FDR's law that allowed him to sell or lend war materials who "any country who's defense the President deems vital to the defense of the U.S. |
Rosie the Riveter | A character that women in America symbolized after women replaced the men in working jobs |
Aircraft carriers | Ships that transport aircraft and accommodate the take off and landing of airplanes |
Battle of Stalingrad | Germany was trying to take control of Stalingrad, but was defeated by the Allies |
D-Day | June 6, 1944- the invasion of France |
Yalta Conference | 1945- the three leaders agreed that the Soviet Union should enter the war against japan within three months of Germany's surrender. |
V-E Day | (Victory in Europe) the day when Germany surrenders |
Nuremburg | After the war, there were war crime trials heled against former Nazi leaders |
United Nations | international organization established after WW2 with the goal of keeping peace and cooperation in the international community |
The Cold War | a state of tension and hostility between nations aligned with the U.S. in one side and the countries aligned with the Soviet Union on the other |
Truman Doctrine | policy that was rooted in the idea of limiting ommunism in the areas already under Soviet control |
Marshall plan | massive aid package offered by U.S. to Europe to help rebiuld countries after WW2 |
North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) | 1949- The U.S., Canada, and 10 other countries formed this military alliance |
Warsaw Pact | 1955- the Soviet Union responded to the NATO by forming this military alliance with seven other satellite countries in Eastern Europe |
