Term | Definition |
Trachea | Tube that carries air to the lungs; it is surrounded by cartilage for strength. |
Bronchi | The branches of the trachea that carry air into the left and right lungs. Smaller tubes continue to branch off inside the lung. |
Alveoli | Tiny sacs inside the lungs surrounded by capillaries to allow waste gases out of and oxygen to move into the blood. |
Kidney | An organ that filters waste from the blood. This organ also maintains homeostasis by regulating the levels of water and salt in the blood. |
Nephron | Microscopic structures in the kidneys that filter blood. |
Bladder | A saclike organ surrounded by voluntary muscle to store urine. |
Diaphragm | The involuntary muscle at the bottom of the lungs that causes air to move in as it contracts. |
Larynx | Part of the respiratory system above the trachea that contains the vocal cords; voice box. |
