Declaration of Independence | Was more of an explanation of Independence. Written by Thomas Jefferson and was approved on July 4, 1776. He argued that the colonists were justified in servering their connection |
Articles of Confederation | the first constitution of the thirteen USA (ineffective government) |
Bill of Rights | guarantee personal liberty |
Cash crop- | tobacco and corn and indigo |
Mercantilism | economic system in which nations seek to increase their wealth and power by obtaining large amounts of gold and silver and by explorting more than importing |
Land ownership (American Indians) | believed that land was owned by the Great Spirit, they thought that they were just sharing it for a period of time |
Enlightenment | Aage of optimism, included realistic recognition of the sad state of the human condition and the need for major reforms. Less a set of ideas than it was a set of attitudes. Critical questioning of traditional institutions, customs, and morals. |
Great Compromise- | the agreement by which Congress would have two houses, the Senate (where each state gets equal representation-two senators) and the House of Representatives (where representation is based on population). |
Columbus- interactions with indigenous peoples | thought he was on the edge of Asia. Called native americans “indians” because he believed he was in India. |
Checks and balances- | division of power between branches of government |
Columbian exchange | The exchange of plants, animals, diseases, and technologies between the Americas and the rest of the world following Columbus's voyages. |
Federalism | supporters of the constitution during the debate over its ratification; favored a strong national government |
