| colony | a settlement in a new territory that keeps close ties to its homeland |
| polis | a tiny independent country known as a city state in ancient Greece |
| agora | an open area below the acropolis served as a market and gathering place for people to meet and debate issues |
| democracy | all citizens share in running the government |
| helot | a captive worker in Sparta |
| oligarchy | a government in which a few people hold power |
| direct democracy | people gather at mass meetings to decide on government matters |
| representative democracy | citizens choose a smaller groups of leaders to make laws and govermental decisions on their behalf |
| comedy | humorous story; the story ends happily |
| tragedy | characters struggle to overcome difficulties but fail |
| drama | a story told by actors who pretend to be characters in the story |
| fable | a short tale that teaches a lesson Ex. Aesop |
| epic | long poems about heroic deeds such as the Iliad and oddyssey |
| myth | traditional stories about gods, goddesses and heroes |
| acropolis | a fortified area in the city state which stood at the top of a hill |
| philosophy | the rational investigation of the truths and principles of being, knowledge, or conduct (love of wisdom) |
| philosophers | believed that the human mind could understand everything |
| legacy | what a person leaves behind when he or she dies |
| Hellenistic Era | "like the Greeks" refers to a time when the Greek language and ideas were spread to the non-Greek people of southwest Asia |
