oligarchy | a government in which a few people hold power |
direct democracy | people gather at mass meetings to decide on government matters |
representative democracy | citizens choose a smaller groups of leaders to make laws and govermental decisions on their behalf |
comedy | humorous story; the story ends happily |
tragedy | characters struggle to overcome difficulties but fail |
drama | a story told by actors who pretend to be characters in the story |

epic | long poems about heroic deeds such as the Iliad and oddyssey |
myth | traditional stories about gods, goddesses and heroes |
acropolis | a fortified area in the city state which stood at the top of a hill |
philosophy | the rational investigation of the truths and principles of being, knowledge, or conduct (love of wisdom) |
philosophers | believed that the human mind could understand everything |
