| Term | Definition |
| Atefacts | objects that come directly from the past. Usually found in an archaeological dig |
| JCB | Digger which removes topsoil |
| Excavation | The process of examining a possible historic site. It Involves recovering the artefact. |
| Dig | The whole excavation is called a dig as archaeologists remove soil. |
| Grid | The site is divided into squares, which are numbered. This allows the workers to record what they have found and where. |
| Aerial Photo | A bird's eye photo of the area. |
| Rescue Archaeology | If they come across a site by accident, archaeologists would have to come in and rescue it. |
| Topsoil | The layer/layers of soil covering the artefact. |
| Map/Plan | Archaeologists need to make a detailed plan for the dig. |
| Trowel | Tool to brush away the dirt |
| Brush | Small shovels are used to remove the soil without damaging the artefact. |
| Sieve | Tool for sifting through the soil to find anything of historical value. |
| Dated | When a historian finds something, they need to bag, label and date it. |
| Stratigraphy | Judging the date of an object by examining the layers of soil above it. |
| Carbon Dating | Judging the date of an object by testing the amount of carbon in it. The less carbon, the older it is. |
| Dendrochronology | Counting the amount of tree rings to find out the date of the tree or objects need by. |
| Pre-history | History before the written word. |
