banding | the arrangement of actin and myosin |
synapse | the site where the axon branch connects into the muscle cell |
synaptic cleft | the space between the presynaptic terminal and muscle cell |
acetylcholine | neurotransmitter secreted from the synaptic vesicle |
acetylcholinesterase | the enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine in the muscle cell |
threshold | the point at which a muscle will react to a stimuli |
lag phase | the time between the application of the stimulus and the beginning of the contraction |
contraction phase | the time of contraction |
relaxation phase | the time during which the muscle relaxes |
tetany | where the muscle remains contracted without relaxing |
anaerobic respiration | without oxygen |
aerobic respiration | with oxygen |
muscle fatigue | when ATP is used during contraction faster than it can be produced |
origin | the most stationary end of the muscle |
insertion | the end of the muscle undergoing the greatest movement |
belly | portion of the muscle between the origin and the insertion |
synergists | muscles that woek together to accomplish a specific movements |
antagonists | muscles that work in oppisition of each other |
intrinsic | tongue muscle that change the shape of the tongue |
extrinsic | tongue muscle that moves the tongue |

frontalis | raises the eyebrows |
