Question | Answer |
Cell | The basic biological unit of living organisms, containing a nucleus and a variety of organelles enclosed by a limiting membrane |
Centrioles | A minute body found near the nucleus of the cell; active in cell division |
Chromatin | The structures in the nucleus that carry the hereditary factors or genes |
Chromosomes | Barlike bodies of tightly coiled chromatin; visible during cell division |
Cillia | Tiny, hairlike projections on cell surfaces that move in a wavelike manner |
Cytoplasm | The substance of a cell other than that of the nucleus |
Cytoskeleton | Cellular skeleton contained within a cell's cytoplasm |
Cytosol | Liquid found inside the cell |
DNA | Nucleic acid found in all living cells; carries the organism's hereditary information |
Flagella | Long, whiplike extensions of the cell membrane of some bacteria and sperm that are used to propel the cell |
Golgi Apparatus | Stack of membranous sacs associated with swarms of tiny vesicles, it is the traffic director for cellular proteins |
Inclusion | Chemical substances that may or may not be present depending on cell type; non-functioning |
Interstitial fluid | Fluid between the cells |
Lysosomes | Organelles that originate from the Golgi Apparatus and contain strong digestive enzymes |
Microvilli | The tiny projections on the free surfaces of some epitelial cells; increase surface area for absorption |
Mitochondria | The rod-like cytoplasmic organelles responsible for ATP generation for cellular activities |
Nuclear membrane | Also known as the nuclear envelope, this is a double lipid bilayer that surrounds the genetic material and nucleolus |
Nucleoli | Small spherical bodies in the cell nucleus; function in ribosome synthesis |
Nucleoplasm | the substance of a cell nucleus |
Nucleus | A dense central body in most cells containing the genetic material of the cell |
Organelles | Specialized structures in a cell that perform specific metabolic functions |
Perixosomes | Membranous sacs containing powerful oxidase enzymes that use molecular oxygen to detoxify a number of harmful or poisonous susbtances |
Plasma (cell) Membrane | Membrane that encloses cell contents |
Ribosomes | Cytoplasmic organelles at which proteins are synthesized |
Rough ER | Studded with ribosomes, essentially all building materials of cellular membranes are formed either in it or on it |
Smooth ER | Functions in cholesterol synthesis and breakdown, fat metabolism, and detoxification of drugs |
