Term | Definition |
Central Nervous System | Brain and Spinal Cord; continuous via foramen magnum. Control sensory info, thoughts, emotions, memories, muscles, and glands. |
Peripheral Nervous System | All nervous structure outside CNS; cranial nerves, spinal nerves, ganglia, enteric plexuses, and sensory receptors |
Cranial Nerves | Base of brain; 12 pairs |
Nerve | Bundle of hundreds to thousands of axons, connective tissue, and blood vessels. |
Spinal Nerves | 31 pairs; Right or left side of body |
Ganglia | Masses of nervous tissue consisting primarily of neuron cell bodies. Located outside brain and spinal cord. Associate with Cranial and Spinal Nerves. |
Enteric Plexuses | Regulate Digestive System |
Sensory Receptors | Monitor changes in internal and external environment. Receptors in skin that detect touch. |
Three Major Functions | Sensory (input), integrative (control), and motor (output) |
Sensory Neurons | Afferent -- carry info to brain and spinal cord via cranial and spinal nerves. Can detect internal and external stimuli |
Integration | Analysis and storage of sensory input, allowing for decision making and responses. |
Perception | Conscious awareness of sensory stimuli. Occurs in brain. |
Interneurous | Connect with other neurons; short distance axons. Make up majority of CNS |
Motor Neurons | Efferent Neurons-- elicit motor response |
Effectors | Muscles and Glands |
Somatic Nervous System | Part of PNS. Consist of somatic sensory neurons and somatic motor neurons. From skin, skeletal msucles, joints and senses. |
Somatic Motor Neurons | Only efferent to skeletal muscles. Voluntary. |
Autonomic Nervous System | Autonomic (visceral) sensory neurons and auto motor neurons (to smooth muscle, glands, and cardiac muscle). Not voluntary reactions (auto) |
Sympathetic Division | Helps support exercise, emergency action. Wider distribution of neurons because closely connected with cardiovascualar system |
Parasympathetic Division | Rest and digest activites. Regulator of digestive and respiratory systems. |
Enteric Nervous system | Brain of Gut. Sensory neurons monitor chemical changes. Motor neurons monitor smooth muscle control and secretions. |
