atlas | C1; no body, cupped superior articular facets, smaller anterior arch, larger posterior arch |
axis | C2; dens that articulates with anterior arch of atlas, has a body, has a spinous process |
cervical vertebrae | neck, 7, C1-C7; have transverse foramen, some have bifid spinous processes |
thoracic vertebrae | 12, T1-T12; giraffe; pointy, downward-facing spinous processes |
lumbar vertebrae | lower back, 5, L1-L5; moose; more blunted, pinched spinous process, large body |
sacrum | 5 fused vertebrae |
coccyx | below sacrum, "tailbone" |
manubrium | superior section of the sternum |
body (sternum) | middle section of the sternum |
xiphoid process | inferior section of the sternum |
true ribs | superior 7 ribs; attach to costal cartilage and then to the sternum |
false ribs | inferior 5 ribs; 8-10 "catch a ride" on the costal cartilage of rib 7 to attach to the sternum; 11-12 float and do not attach to the sternum |
floating ribs | a type of false rib - ribs 11 and 12 - do not attach to the sternum (directly or indirectly) |
