Term | Definition |
head | the rounded proximal end of a long bone |
facet | a small smooth area |
condyle | a rounded projection at the end of a bone, usually for articulation |
ramus | a part of bone that is thicker than a process and forms an angle with the main body |
fossa | a hollow or depressed area, usually smooth and slightly rounded |
tuberosity | an elevation, especially one where a muscle attaches |
crest | a projecting ridge, especially surrounding the border of a bone |
line | a narrow ridge, usually does not protrude much |
trochanter | one of the two bony projections on the proximal end of the femur, attachments for muscle |
tubercle | a nodule or small eminence, especially for attachment of a tendon |
epicondyle | a rounded projection at the end of a bone, on or above the condyle, place of attachment for ligaments and tendons |
spine | a slender, thorn-like projection |
meatus | an opening or passage |
sinus | a recess, cavity, or channel |
groove | a narrow, linear hollow or depression |
fissure | a cleft or groove (usually larger in scale) |
foramen | a hole - a natural opening or passage |
