| Term | Definition |
| primary motor cortex-area 4 | origin of pyramidal efferent projections- make up corticobulbar and corticospinal tracts |
| primary sensory cortex-area 17, 18, 19 | visual function 19- association with visual area of contralateral space |
| primary somatosensory cortex-areas 1, 2, 3 | somatosensory- post-central gyrus afferents- VPL, VPM, assoc. fibers from adjacent primary motor cortex efferents- assoc. fibers to ipsilateral motor cortex, commissural fibers, projection fibers to VPN and periaqueductal gray(suppresses pain) |
| primary sensory cortex-temporal lobe-areas 41, 42, 22 | auditory 41- receives most info from medial geniculate nucleus 42- receives from medial geniculate but mostly from 41 |
| unimodal sensory association cortex | info from primary sensory cortex-multistage hierarchial processor that carries out successively more sophistocated analysis of neural activity in primary sensory cortex |
| unimodal motor association cortex | projects to primary motor cortex-develops complex motor actions involving multiple joints/structuresheter |
| heteromodal association areas | bidirectional connections w both motor and sensory cortices of all modalities and limbic cortex- highest order of mental functions |
| frontal lobe | actions, decisions, problem solving, taking in information and making use of the information |
| anterior cerebral artery | supplies knee, hip, trunk- medial portions |
| frontal eye-field- area 8 | voluntary conjugate movement of eyes- lesion here will make eyes deviate to effected eye |
| reflex following center- area 7 | parietal lobe works with this area to allow the eyes to find an object and follow it in space |
| premotor cortex- area 6 | gross coordination of voluntary motor activity-supplementary motor area and premotor area(cognitive input and sensory input) |
| Broca's motor speech cortex- area 44, 45 | 44- speech production, 45-language comprehension inferior frontal gyrus |
| supplementary motor area | projects to primary motor cortex, involved in developing motor programs for complex actions involving multiple joints/structures |
| prefrontal cortex | anterior frontal lobes containing dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, orbitofrontal cortex, medial and anterior prefrontal cortex, ant and ventral cingulate cortex- works for executive fxn |
| dorsolateral prefrontal cortex | brodman areas 9-46- fxn- highest cortical area responsible for executive fxn, important for working memory, decision making, integration of information |
| orbitofrontal cortex | primitive- fear, hunger, thirst more complex- love, envy, jealousy, ethics, morals limbic system-emotions |
| cingulate gyrus | integration area connecting prefrontal cortex and limbic system- activated less in people who are not as outgoing active in problem solving, recognizing errors |
| somatosensory association cortex- areas 5 and 7 | left side areas 5 and 7- gross integration of fine touch sensation and even more fine tune interpretation right side-spatial control related to visual system |
| supramarginal gyrus- area 40- inferior parietal lobe | sensory association- ability to write meaningful language and integrates kinesthetic memories w auditory commands |
| arcuate fasciculus | goes from brocas area to wernickes area |
| wernickes area- 22 | left side- association with meaningful speech right side-association w emotional infliction of specch(prosidy) |
| angular gyrus- area 39 | integration of auditory and visual information- highly active during interpretation of meaningful written language |
| insula | anterior portion- receives info having to do with smell, taste, visceral fxn and limbic fxn posterior- auditory, somesthetic, and senorimotor |
