Bones of the cranium | Frontal Bone (1), Parietal Bones (2), Occipital Bone (1), Temporal Bones (2), Sphenoid Bone (1), Ethmoid Bone (1) |
Frontal Bone | forms the forehead, roof of the orbits and upper part of nasal cavity |
Glabella | raised portion of Frontal bone, located between the eyebrows |
Parietal Bones | forms the roof and upper sides of skull |
Temporal Fossa | formed by the two ridges (superior and inferior) on the sides of the parietal bones |
Occipital Bone | forms back of skull and cranial base |
Foramen Magnum | large opening at bottom of skull to let nerves and upper spinal cord pass through |
Condyle | coarticulates with C1 (Atlas) |
Occiput | the bottom area of the skull, rests in the facet of the Atlas to form the atlanto-occipital joint |
Temporal Bones | bones facing temples and part of cranial floor. Protect organ of hearing and balance. |
Squamous portion of temporal bone | front part of temporal bone, attached to greater wing of sphenoid bone and parietal bone |
Zygomatic process of temporal bone | coarticulates with zygomatic bone to from the zygomatic arch |
Mandibular fossa of temporal bone | articulates with condyloid process of mandible to form temporomandibular joint |
Mastoid portion of the temporal bone | rearmost part of temporal bone with mastoid process |
Mastoid process of the temporal bone | conical prominence where digastric, sternocleidomastoid, and other muscles attach |
Styloid Process of the temporal bone | serves as anchor for several muscles associated with tongue and larynx |
Parts of the temporal bone (7) | styloid process, mastoid process, external auditory meatus, mastoid portion, mandibular fossa, zygomatic process, squamous portion |
Sphenoid bone | anterior to temporal bone on either side, looks like a butterfly with wings extended |
Ethmoid bone | spongy, lightweight bone located between orbits, separates the nasal cavity from the brain |
Parts of the ethmoid bone | crista galli which protrudes into cranial space, perpendicular plate or nasal septum, nasal conchae, cribiform plate |
Cribiform plate of the ethmoid bone | separates the nasal from cranial cavity (conduit for olfactory neurons) |
suture | type of joint only occurring in the cranium, allowing a tiny amount of movement |
fontanel | the resulting soft spot between unfused portions of the cranial bones (many bones of cranium remain unfused at birth) |
craniosynostosis | when bones fuse prematurely. brain will grow wherever it can, or may not be able to at all->may lead to mental retardation or death. |
Bones of the face | mandible, maxilla, palatine bone, nasal bone, vomer, zygomatic bone, lachrymal bone |
mandible | only movable bone in skull |
There is an articulation between _______ _______ and _________ _______ of the temporal bone (mandible movement) | condyloid process, mandibular fossa |
________ _______ fits beneath the zygomatic arch (mandible movement) | coronoid process |
mandibular notch | depression between condylar process and coronoid process allowing passage of nerves and vessels |
angle of mandible | back corner of mandible |
ramus | section between angle and processes |
maxilla | below orbits and above mandible. mount the top row of teeth--those teeth cannot move vis-a-vis the rest of the cranium; chew by moving mandibular teeth against them. |
frontal process of maxilla | exterior surface of maxilla between orbit and nasal cavity |
orbital surface of maxilla | upper part forming the lower and inner surface of orbit cavity |
zygomatic process | articulates with zygomatic bone |
anterior 3/4 of hard palate | 2 palatine processes of maxilla join at intermaxillary suture |
posterior 1/4 of hard palate | horizontal plate of palatine bone joined with maxilla at transverse palatine suture |
incisive foramen | small foramen behind incisor teeth, access to CNV (trigeminal) |
nasal bone | forms the bridge of the nose, articulates with frontal bone below glabella, maxilla laterally, perpendicular plate of ethmoid bone |
palatine bone | make up part of orbital floor, nasal cavity and back part of palate |
vertical plates of palatine bone articulates with | nasal conchae, ethmoid bone and vomer |
vomer | the flat bone forming the lower portion of nasal septum. supports perpendicular plate of ethmoid bone |
zygomatic bone | forms the cheek and lower outside rim of orbits |
zygomatic arch | where the zygomatic process of zygomatic bone meets zygomatic process of temporal bone |
frontal process of zygomatic bone | meets frontal bone |
maxillary process of zygomatic bone | meets the maxilla |
lachrymal bone | small channels called lachrymal fossa allow tear ducts to drain into the nasal cavity. articulates with frontal bone, ethmoid bone, maxilla and inferior nasal concha |
lips | soft, movable and visible part of mouth. food intake and articulation of sound and speech. extend from bottom of nose to mentolabial sulcus |
vermillion | incorrectly referred to as lips, is only the red part |
oral cavity | responsible for articulation in speech, tasting, chewing and swallowing. top formed by palatine bones and palatine processes of maxilla, bottom by mandible. |
dental arcade | formed by teeth from maxillary sockets (top) and mandibular sockets (bottom) |
