5. muscle tone | continuous contractions |
6. flexion | hinge joints |
7. extension | increases distance between two bones |
8. rotation | ball-and-socket joints |
9. abduction | away from the midline |
10. adduction | toward the midline |
11. circumduction | combination of flexion, extension, abduction, and adduction |
12. aerobic | more resistance to fatigue |
13. anerobic | less resistance to fatigue. stronger |
14. endomysium | tissue sheath around a muscle fiber |
15. perimysium | sheath outside endomysium |
16. fascicle | bundle of muscle fibers |
17. striated muscle | muscles with stripes on them |
18. smooth muscle | muscles that are smooth |
19. cardiac muscle | only found in heart |
20. tendons | attach muscle too bone |
21. what is contractility? | the ability of skeletal muscle to shorten with force |
22. what is excitability? | the capacity of skeletal muscle to respond to a stimulous |
23. what is the epimysium? | surrounds the skeletal muscle |
24. what is the perimysium ? | a coarse fibrous membrane |
25.what is a striated muscle? | skeletal muscle that is striped |
26.what are muscle fibers? | elongated muscle cells |
27.what is a smooth muscle ? | has no striations and is involuntary, which means that you cannot continuously control it. |
28.what is the A band ? | extends the length of the myosin. it is the darker central region in each sarcomere. |
29.what is the H zone? | the light area in the center of each sarcomere witch consists of only myosin. |
30.what is the resting membrane potential? | the charge difference across the membrane |
31.what is action potential? | when a muscle cell is stimulated the membrane characteristics reverse the charge back. |
32.what are motor neurons? | are nerve cells the carry action potentials to skeletal muscle fibers |
33.what is a synapse? | near the center of the cell |
34.what is a presynaptic terminal? | the enlarged nerve terminal |
35.what is the synaptic cleft? | the space between the presynaptic terminal and the muscle cell |
36.what is a acetylcholine? | a neurotransmitter the diffuses across the synaptic cleft and binds to thepostsynaptic terminal |
37.what is a muscle twitch? | a contraction of an entire muscle in response to a stimulus that causes the action potential in one or more muscle fibers |
38.what is a lag phase? | the time between application of a stimulus to a motor neuron and the beginning of the contraction |
what is the contraction phase? | the time of the contraction |
